Erratic Space: Victoria Park - Don Gill
Traveling and walking have been linked to the act of photography since the origin of optical based viewing; the camera has become not just an accessory of travel but a reason for it. Many photographers talk about “the walk” being central to their process and the road trip has become a cliché of photographic production since Robert Frank and his “Americans”.
I am a process oriented artist and a peripatetic individual with an interest in history. With these defining characteristics it was a seamless transition to merge the processes of photography, walking and collecting into an artwork. Erratic Space is a methodology, a performed work and an archive, all of which together make up the complete work.
Considering architectural theorist Francesco Careri’s idea of “erratic terrain” being a Neolithic pre-nomadic space that is unmapped and empty, a space that is free for roaming, I have incorporated the act of roaming into the work. And as I roam Victoria Park and its environs I gather images, artifacts, conversations, video clips, newspapers, stories, maps, histories, and other detritus. This collection is archived in the gallery space as a record of my hunting and gathering in Victoria Park and environs during my period of residence. The work will grow in the gallery as I roam the streets and return daily to the gallery to process my acquisitions.

- Don Gill is based in Lethbridge, Alberta. He is a conceptual artist utilizing photography, video, film, writing, performance, curation, artist books and installation. He teaches in the Department of Art at the University of Lethbridge.
